Steam Coal
Steam coal — also known as thermal coal — is primarily utilized for electricity generation and industrial heating. Owing to its wide availability and cost efficiency, it remains one of the most extensively used fossil fuels worldwide.
The quality of steam coal varies based on its origin and geological formation. It is characterized by a high carbon content and moderate sulfur levels, with energy output differing according to its grade:
-
Sub-bituminous coal: A lower-grade variety commonly used in power plants due to its moderate energy content.
-
Bituminous coal: A higher-grade type valued for its greater energy output and more efficient combustion.
-
Anthracite: The highest-grade coal, offering the most energy per unit, though it is less frequently used for power generation.

Coking Coal
Coking coal, also known as metallurgical coal, is a high-grade type of coal primarily used to produce coke — an essential material in steelmaking. Unlike steam coal, which is mainly utilized for power generation, coking coal possesses unique properties that make it indispensable in industries requiring high-strength materials, especially in steel production.
Coking coal is defined by its ability to undergo carbonization — a process in which the coal is heated in the absence of air to form coke, a hard and porous substance crucial for the steelmaking process. Key features of coking coal include:
-
High carbon content: Provides the necessary quality for coke production and aids in reducing iron ore within blast furnaces.
-
Low sulfur and ash: Ensures minimal impurities during steelmaking, improving the purity and strength of the final product.
-
Caking properties: When heated, the coal softens, expands, and solidifies into coke, forming the strong, porous structure needed to sustain blast furnace operations.
